Newbridge v Pontypridd – Matchday Preview

0 3

Next up for Pontypridd RFC is an Admiral Premiership match away against Newbridge RFC. The contest takes place on Saturday 14th February with a 2:30pm kick off at The Welfare Ground.

Ponty’s last visit to Newbridge came on Saturday 25th January 2025, and it was the Valley Commandos who came away with a hard-fought 30 points to 22 win. Current players who were amongst the points scorers were Joe Davies with a try and Dale Stuckey with a conversion.

The two clubs met earlier this season back on Saturday 11th October, and it was Pontypridd who enjoyed a big 66-17 win. The home side ran in no fewer than ten tries on a delightful autumnal afternoon at Sardis Road, Joe Davies (2), Iwan Griffith (2), Jorge Lucey, Louis Tovey, Cai James, Lucus Welch, Jordan Coxley and a Penalty-try were the names in the try column.

Cai James scored our 7th try against the men from The Welfare Ground earlier this season.

It’s now the time of the season when the Six Nations schedule affects Premiership fixtures, but there are matches taking place including two on Saturday just gone. Merthyr’s win way at Cardiff Met has closed the gap to Ponty to two points. Pontypridd still sit in second place, two points behind Beddau in first – there’s just four points separating the top three teams.

Newbridge occupy 10th place and are currently on a run of five consecutive losses in the league, however, four of those losses have been by just seven points or less and they suffered a heartbreaking loss away at Merthyr 26-22 in their last outing after being 22-7 up at half time.

The Admiral Welsh Premiership league table, accurate as of 9/2/2026.

This Saturday will be the fifth time the two clubs have faced off in just 18 months, and Pontypridd know that they will have to keep on the winning trail in order to maintain their title charge – c’mon the Pont!
