Ty Gwynno Care Home’s ‘Dementia Choir’ to perform at Sardis Road

Supporters will be treated to something a little different at an upcoming home match when local care home Ty Gwynno’s ‘Dementia Choir’ will be performing at Sardis Road.

Wales, rugby and singing – the three put together are synonymous with the sport in our country, and Pontypridd RFC cannot wait to welcome the residents, staff and other stakeholders from Ty Gwynno Care Home when the team play Neath in the Admiral Premiership on Saturday 7th March at Sardis Road – the choir will be performing on the pitch pre-match.

Ty Gwynno Care Home is located in nearby Hopkinstown and The ‘Dementia Choir’ is made up from the residents, staff and their relatives. They have a large number of residents who participate in the choir, however, some of these are limited to who can attend events.

Ty Gwynno’s Home Manager Rebecca Harkus said: “We started our love for singing together during the Pandemic, and this snowballed into us being invited to sing at the National Eisteddfod in Pontypridd. We sang alongside Welsh National opera singer Sian Meinir, on the Maes, what a privilege! We then did an ad hoc performance for their Royal Highnesses the Prince and Princess of Wales when they visited Pontypridd Market in 2025. We at Ty Gwynno are proud Welsh valleys people, and it has been on our bucket list for some time to perform at Sardis Road in our home town. Not only do we love to sing, we love rugby! This is a wish come true – next stop the Millennium Stadium! The residents who are unable to attend will be with us in spirit drinking our home brew in our new bar Y Tafarn bach.”

The links don’t just end there, Rebecca’s dad is former Ponty player John Hall who made 93 appearances for the Club between 1965 to 1973, and she said: “I am proud of his achievement and I know if he was with us today he would be just as proud as I would be!”

As a club, Pontypridd RFC is proud to open its doors to Ty Gwynno Care Home and its residents, staff and family members. We pride ourselves on being rooted in the local community and events like this are our way of celebrating the Home’s work – it promises to be a special occasion in early March.
