Pontypridd v Bargoed – Matchday Preview

0 3

This Saturday 31st January Pontypridd RFC are back in action after a weekend off when they take on Bargoed RFC at Sardis Road in the Admiral Premiership, kick off is 2:30pm.

Ponty travelled to Bargoed Park to play Bargoed earlier in the current league campaign on Saturday 4th October 2025, and came away with a bonus-point win. There was nothing between the teams at the break with the score locked at six points apiece, but a strong second half showing which included tries for Oli Shepherd, Jordan Coxley, Dale Stuckey and Ethan Evans sealed a 28-11 win.

Honours were shared in the league last season, Ponty beat Bargoed at Sardis by 34 points to 19 on Saturday 14th September 2024 before Bargoed avenged that defeat triumphing at Bargoed Park by a 28-19 scoreline back in May.

As well as crucial league points being up for grabs, there’s the additional caveat of there being points on offer for the Mid District Premiership Cup as well. Here’s our update article which was published yesterday – Mid District Premiership Cup: Standings Update

Jordan Coxley, pictured here at Bargoed Park back in October, scored the second of our four tries that afternoon.

The Valley Commandos’ last outing was a 40-12 win a fortnight ago against Llangennech at Sardis Road. At the time that victory maintained the team’s lead at the top of the Premiership table, however, Beddau’s narrow win at Newbridge on Saturday sees the men from Mount Pleasant Park leapfrog Pontypridd into pole position.

Saturday’s opponents Bargoed currently occupy 6th place in the league, their last league outing was a 33-29 defeat at home against Beddau two weeks ago. Prior to that the men from Bargoed Park won their previous two matches against Narberth and Brecon respectively. This Saturday’s match will see the Rhymney Valley outfit visit Sardis Road for the second consecutive Saturday following their Welsh Cup semi-final against Merthyr over the weekend. In a close-fought contest it was heartbreak for Bargoed who, despite nearly scoring a try at the end of the match, lost 19-16.

The Admiral Welsh Premiership table, accurate as of 26/1/2026.

So there we have it – two Mid District clubs locking horns with both Premiership and Mid District Cup points up for grabs this Saturday, it should be a cracker!
