Pontypridd 40-12 Llangennech – Match Report
Ponty played their first home fixture of 2026 at home against Llangennech and kept alive their title hopes by completing an emphatic seven try victory by 40pts to 12.
The home team began the game in positive fashion, applying early pressure but a long range Logan Jones penalty wide of the target. An ensuing line-out drive was held up just short as Llangennech were serially penalised but Ponty persevering and electing to go for points as debutant outside half Jones put over a penalty from in front of the posts. Ponty maintained momentum through a dynamic attack spearheaded by Dale Stuckey, and opposite wing Joe Davies, having been down with a worrying injury, back on his feet to lead another foray, full back Lloyd Wilkins crossing in the corner but the score disallowed. Llangennech finally had a brief period with ball in hand only for Ponty to counter, and after the visitors’ captain Shaun Edwards was yellow carded, turning pressure into points from an attacking line-out as hooker Louis Tovey sniped over for an unconverted try.
The first quarter had been played almost exclusively in the visitors’ half and Ponty remained in the ascendancy as Logan Jones fashioned a half break before putting Joe Davies in for a try. Llangennech again enjoyed a brief foray into the home twenty-two but a Ponty counter led by Joe Davies allowing Lloyd Wilkins to race in to score by the corner flag. The home pack looked strong in the scrum, setting a platform to advance, launching wide attacks with wingers Davies and Thorrington combining effectively. Again from an attacking set-piece Ponty applied pressure allowing flanker Cai James to cross from close range, his try converted by Wilkins to give his side a 25pts to 0 interval lead with the bonus point already in the bag.
HALF TIME: Pontypridd 25-0 Llangennech
The visitors made a positive start to the second period, pressing into home territory, enjoying more possession than they had throughout the first forty minutes and with Ponty for once having to graft hard in defence. Normal service was resumed as Ponty launched a dynamic counter led by George Thorrington and with Lloyd Wilkins going over but his try again disallowed. Llangennech pressed for a while but then lost ground as both Thorrington and Wilkins went close to scoring in the corner. The contest was by now far more evenly balanced in terms of territory and possession with the visitors striving hard to create a scoring opportunity but the third quarter remaining scoreless.
It was Ponty who finally stepped up to break the deadlock from a wide attack as Thorrington cut through to claim a well deserved try. The game had lost its shape somewhat with neither side dominant and with some scrappy episodes of play, the home side’s frustrations summed up as centre Stuart Floyd-Ellis was shown yellow for infringing. The visitors again plied into their opponents’ twenty-two and after being held up on the line from a tap penalty, persisted to put replacement Louis Rees over for a try wide out. Ponty’s response was to set up a line-out drive, hooker Connah Hughes the trailer behind the truck to claim a try, but Llangennech striking back in style as centre Tiaan Evans cut through and his midfield partner Kalum Evans crossing for a try which was improved by Osian Evans’ conversion. The last word fittingly belonged to Ponty, attacking wide out with replacement scrum half Lloyd Dennett stretching over for an injury time try, to round off his side’s victory by 40pts to 12.
