Narberth v Pontypridd – Matchday Preview

0 2

Next up for Pontypridd RFC is an Admiral Premiership match away against Narberth RFC. The contest takes place on Saturday 10th January with a 2:30pm kick off at the Lewis Lloyd Ground.

The two clubs met earlier this season on the second weekend of the campaign, Saturday 13th September, at Sardis Road. Two tries from Joe Davies to go with scores for Joe Miles, Dale Stuckey and Connah Hughes helped seal a well deserved win by 35 points to 12 for the home side.

Last season Ponty visited the Lewis Lloyd Ground on Saturday 1st February, and it was a clash that went down to the wire. On a heavy pitch, Joe Davies and George Thorrington both bagged tries which saw the Valley Commandos triumph by a slender 16-13 scoreline. Prior to that match The Otters visited Sardis earlier in the prior campaign on Saturday 12th October 2024 and it was a try-fest! Mitch Barnard, Cai James, Cally James, Louis Rochefort-Shugar, Joe Miles and Dale Stuckey were all amongst the Pontypridd try-scorers in a match that saw eleven touch downs in total – the home side won by 52 points to 23.

Last Saturday proved to be a frustrating one on the pitch for Pontypridd RFC. The team were due to play Brecon at Sardis Road, but due to the cold weather the surface was deemed unplayable on medical grounds at the 11th hour, and the match was postponed. Off the pitch the team remain top of the Admiral Premiership standings, due in large part to Neath’s excellent win by 40 points to 28 against Merthyr at The Wern. However, Merthyr’s four-try bonus point has reduced Ponty’s lead to just a single point.

Narberth currently occupy 11th place in the Premiership having won four out of ten of their league matches this season. On Saturday their match away at Bargoed went ahead courtesy of Bargoed being able to switch the match to the 3G pitch at Ystrad Mynach’s Centre of Excellence. The Otters led 14-0 at the break, but in an entertaining second half they eventually went down 33-29 and had to settle for two bonus points for their efforts.
