Pontypridd v Ystrad Rhondda – Matchday Preview

0 3

Next up for Pontypridd RFC is the second instalment in a trilogy of festive derby matches when Ystrad Rhondda RFC make the short trip to Sardis Road this Saturday 20th December. The Admiral Premiership match between the two clubs kicks off at 2:30pm.

The spoils were shared one-each during the last campaign. It’ll be nearly a year to the day that this very fixture took place at Sardis, when on Saturday 21st December 2024, the Valley Commandos earned a hard-fought 26-17 win. Last year’s encounter went down to the wire in front of a bumper crowd before Joe Miles crossed for a late try, completing a hattrick of scores for him, and sealed the win the process.

Ystrad enjoyed a successful first season at Premiership level in 2024/25 and exacted revenge against Ponty on Saturday 26th April 2025 when they triumphed 39-26 at Gelligaled Park.

Pontypridd head into the week’s match having succumbed in the Valleys Derby away at Merthyr on Saturday. The team rallied in the second half at The Wern but went down 38-28 and had to settle for a four-try bonus point for their efforts on the day.

Ponty’s loss and Beddau’s win away at Brecon has seen the Club drop one place down to third in the Premiership standings. Ystrad enjoyed a bonus-point  35-19 win at home against Bargoed last time out. It’s a result that sees the Gelligaled Park men stay in 5th place in the league, but they’ll now have their eyes set on the top 4 heading into this week’s derby.

As has already been mentioned this fixture was played out in front of a bumper, estimated 4,000 strong crowd at Sardis last season. Pontypridd RFC are expecting a similar, if not bigger attendance this week, so it promises to be another electric atmosphere created by both clubs’ supporters which will add to the spectacle yet again.
