Merthyr v Pontypridd – Matchday Preview

0 7

Next up for Pontypridd RFC is a Valleys Derby match away against Merthyr RFC in the Admiral Premiership, it takes place on Saturday 13th December at The Wern and kicks off at 2:30pm.

Games between the two clubs need very little introduction or hyping up, and this week’s encounter is no different – it’s another top of the table clash, and despite it still being December, this week’s result could go a long way to deciding the final destination of the 2025/26 Premiership title.

Merthyr won all three matches between the two clubs last season – by 28 points to 25 at The Wern on 9th November 2024 and by 33 points to 19 at Sardis on 22nd March earlier this year in the league. The two sides then met in the Mid District Premiership Final at Sardis Road back on Saturday 17th May, with the Ironmen triumphing in that by a 26-14 scoreline.

Pontypridd may have lost at The Wern last season, but will take heart from their second half showing in which they nearly sneaked the win, but it wasn’t to be. The Valley Commandos will know that only a full eighty-minute performance will suffice at the home of the Premiership Champions if they want to earn the derby-day bragging rights come late Saturday afternoon.

Cai James, pictured here, scored Ponty’s third and final try towards the end of last season’s Valleys Derby at The Wern.

To the present, and Ponty secured a hard-fought 17-10 win at home against Cardiff Met at Sardis Road on Saturday. That win, added to the fact Merthyr’s match away at Bargoed fell foul to weather means Pontypridd cut their deficit to just four points behind Merthyr ahead of this week’s top of the table clash.

The Admiral Welsh Premiership league table, accurate as of 8/12/2025.

As always, the travelling Pontypridd faithful will play an instrumental part if the team are to secure victory at The Wern for this first time since March 2020 – we’ll see you all on Saturday #PontyFans
