Pontypridd v Bedwas – Matchday Preview

0 42

Next up for Pontypridd RFC is a mid-season friendly against Bedwas RFC at Sardis Road. It takes place this coming Thursday 20th November and will kick off at 7:15pm.

Matches between the two clubs date back to 21st February 1979, Ponty won the maiden encounter 24 points to 6 at Sardis Road. During the ‘semi-professional era’ post-regionalisation this fixture had been a staple of the season up until the end of 2018/19 when, unfortunately Bedwas were relegated from the Welsh Premiership.

The last meeting between Ponty and Bedwas took place at Sardis Road nearly seven years ago, when on Saturday 15th December 2018, the Valley Commandos secured a 54-17 Premiership win. Dale Stuckey was amongst the Pontypridd try scorers that afternoon, while Joel Raikes appeared off the bench.

Ponty player-coach Iestyn Harris is poised to take the pass from from Wales prop Keiron Assiratti in Pontypridd’s 29-20 victory over Bedwas at Sardis on 30/12/2017.

To the here and now and there’s less than 10 miles between the two clubs geographically, and one division between them statistically. Yesterday’s results mean Ponty have been replaced at the top of the Premiership standings by Merthyr following the Ironmen’s home win against Beddau by 22 points to 15. Bedwas are enjoying a superb campaign in this season’s Championship East and have won eight matches out of eight, securing a maximum 40 league points in the process and unsurprisingly sit at the top of the tree. The Bridge Field men beat Aberdare by 67 points to 7 yesterday afternoon in their latest outing

Pontypridd’s next league match isn’t until Saturday 6th December against Cardiff Met, so Thursday’s friendly will be the perfect chance to keep momentum going and give valuable game time to the squad – we’ll see you under the Sardis lights later in the week.
