LUCTONIANS BOUNCE BACK IN STYLE

Luctonians put to bed any doubts anyone might have had about their ability to bounce back following last week’s home defeat against Hinckley, by beating another old adversary Chester, comfortably 42-0.

A game which was surprisingly still on, following the 100mm of rain locally from Storm Claudia on the Friday, was full of attacking intent from the home side who ran in 5 tries before half time. Chester huffed and puffed and defended stoutly second half, but had no answer to the pace and desire of the home side to get over the tryline in the first 40 minutes.

Full back, Josh Watkins opened their tab when he sneaked in under the posts following good work by the forwards; Tom Jones converting (7-0) after 12 minutes. And man of the match, scrum half Owen Randell wriggled over 5 minutes later to double up the tally, Jones again converting (14-0).

Lucs were kept honest by a Chester side who had their moments but were unable to exploit any pressure they created in the Lucs red zone, with Jones’s clearance kicks deep into the Chester half, keeping them on the back foot.

Harry Whiteman came out on the bottom of a forwards try after 22 minutes, when he was driven over, Jones again converting (21-0), and Ben Link’s interception and run-in try from 30 metres out just after the half hour, killed off any real opportunity Chester may have had of getting back into the game (28-0).

To add to Chesters’ woe, wing Rob Aikman stole over just before half time to give the home side a 35 points advantage, Jones again converting to give the home side a healthy lead as the teams went into the shed at half time.

The second half, in the gloom, wasn’t as enterprising as the first for the sizeable crowd, with neither side looking overly likely to score. Joe White for the home side and Gavin Woods both saw yellow for a ‘handbags’ moment after 53 mins, and it took the live wire Owen Randell, just minutes later, to make the difference when his furtive ability to make something out of nothing, snatched a ball away from a driving maul close in to dot down, and he added the extras for a 42-0 and final score line.

Charlie Grimes made a miraculous tackle chasing a lost cause, when Chester looked like they would break their duck late on, but they couldn’t trouble the scorers, despite the home side having James Wheeler receive a yellow card, late on, for a tip tackle.

Luctonians go on the road next week for the first of two trips to Cornwall before Christmas, to play Redruth, with Chester at home v Hinckley.
