In Memoriam – Bobby Narbett

0 4

Pontypridd RFC are saddened to learn of the passing of former player and captain Robert ‘Bobby’ Narbett. Bobby passed away earlier this month at the age of 99.

Bobby made his debut for Ponty on 7th January 1950 against Newbridge at Ynysangharad Park, and would go on to be club captain for the 1952/53 season, before making the last of his 74 appearances for Pontypridd on 28th September 1955 away against Bridgend.

A tough, uncompromising scrum-half, when Club Historian Alun Granfield reflected on the 1950/51 season in his book ‘In Black and White’, talking about Bobby in his first full season at the club, he goes on to say “Bobby appears to have acquired a reputation for being knocked out in game after game, but inevitably recovered to play on” – such was his determination to not let his team mates down during matches.

During his 74 Pontypridd appearances, Bobby scored 3 tries, 13 conversions and 2 penalties totalling 41 points.

His funeral will take place on 14th November, 2:30pm at St Mary’s Church, Caldicot.

Everyone at Pontypridd RFC would like to pass on its sincerest condolences to Bobby’s family and friends at this extremely sad time.
