0 43

This autumn, as part of a new partnership with Sinclair Land Rover, Luctonians launched the first-ever Sinclair Defender Schools Rugby Series, offering free training and rugby skills sessions to five local high schools.

The sessions, aimed at Year 7 boys and girls, provided an introduction to rugby through fun, inclusive coaching, and culminated in three competitive tournament afternoons at Mortimer Park. Across the series, more than 60 boys took part, with many experiencing their first taste of competitive rugby.

Round 1 – Weobley Set the Pace

In the opening round, played under bright autumn sunshine, Weobley High School made an outstanding start — scoring 19 tries and winning all three of their matches to top the table. Earl Mortimer College were also commended for their tremendous effort and commitment, with nearly 90% of their squad playing competitive rugby for the first time.

Standings After Round 1:
1. Weobley – 6 pts
2. Lady Hawkins – 4 pts

3. QE Bromyard – 3 pts
4. Earl Mortimer College – 2 pts
5.  Wigmore – 0 pts

Round 2 – Wigmore Make Their Mark

Round Two, played on a proper autumnal afternoon, produced another strong display of school rugby. Wigmore High School shone on their series debut, claiming back-to-back wins over Earl Mortimer College and QE Bromyard. Their performances tightened the standings and set up an exciting finale.

Standings After Round 2:

2. Weobley – 6 pts

Round 3 – Wigmore Seal the Title

The final round took place on Tuesday 21st October with all five schools in attendance and friends and family cheering from the sidelines. Over 60 players represented their schools with pride, producing some thrilling rugby to close out the series.

Building on their success in Round 2, Wigmore continued their fine form — winning all four matches to complete back-to-back clean sweeps and finish unbeaten. Weobley followed closely behind with another impressive showing to secure second place, while Lady Hawkins finished third after earning a win and a draw against QE Bromyard. QE took fourth courtesy of that draw, while Earl Mortimer College continued to demonstrate strong development and determination.

Despite missing Round 1, Wigmore’s dominant performances in the final two rounds saw them crowned the first-ever Sinclair Defender Schools Series Champions.

Final Series Standings:
1st – Wigmore – 12 pts
2nd – Weobley – 10 pts

Celebrating Community Rugby

Luctonians would like to extend a huge thank you to all the schools, coaches, and referees for their support in making the boys’ series such a success — and to The Sinclair Group for their generous sponsorship and continued commitment to school and community rugby.

With the boys’ series concluded, attention now turns to the Girls Schools Series, which will begin after half term.
