Driffield 34 – 31 Cleckheaton : Saturday, 11 October 2025

In the eleven games against Cleckheaton at Kelleythorpe since 1995-96, this has been the outcome :

• Drawn 1 (last year 33-33)
• Lost 7

With lots of injuries and unavailability for Driffield, yet again the team included young lads who need applauding for their outstanding efforts – there were great performances for the lads who are stepping up.  This included a very young back row, who stood up to the test of a typical Cleckheaton performance.

First half penalties gave Cleckheaton hope, some relatively easy points and a seven-point lead at half time.

In the second half, Cleckheaton started to struggle fitness-wise and the penalty count showed in the end.

In the final ten minutes, Driffield should have put Cleckheaton to bed, and scored another try or two.

Cleckheaton clearly targeted the match as a game to win – they threw everything at the Woldsmen and fully deserved the two points they left with.  It was a scrappy afternoon against a determined side.

Five points for Driffield lifts them to sixth place, and is a massive outcome with the games to come for Driffield.

• 15:24 : Cleckheaton score another try after missed tackles got them in range, from where they bullied over.  Converted D 10 – 21 C
• 15:34 : Will Robson bullocks through from 10 out to score, and Napier converts. D 17 – 21 C
• 15:38 : Cleckheaton penalty from 40 out is converted.  D 17 – 24 C
• 15:40 : Napier penalty shot went right.
• 15:41 : HALF TIME
• 15:49 : Henry Furbank bullocks over from five out to score under the sticks, converted by Napier. Drawn at 24 each
• 15:51 : Cleckheaton sneak through from five out to score their bonus point try, converted. D 24 – 31 C
• 16:08 : Fothergill goes in from five to score Driffield’s bonus point try, converted by Napier.  Now drawn at 31 each
• 16:11 : Driffield starting to get the upper hand, and are held up over line.
• 16:16 : Napier penalty on the 22 well right of sticks allows Driffield to take the lead D 34 – 31 C
• 16:28 : FULL TIME

The result gives Driffield five very valuable points, and Cleckheaton their first of the season.

• 2nds won 74 – 38 in their friendly against Ilkley
• 3rds win 41 – 17 at BP. Down to 12 men at one stage. Great effort ????
• 4ths drew 31 – 31 at Goole with a last-minute try drawing them level
