Pontypridd v Cilfynydd – Matchday Preview

0 4

Next up in Pontypridd RFC’s pre-season schedule is the visit of near-neighbours Cilfynydd RFC this Saturday 16th August. The friendly match against Cil at Sardis Road kicks off at 2:30pm.

The history of matches between Pontypridd and Cilfynydd goes back all the way back to 22nd April 1946 with the two clubs having played each other 61 times between then and 1993. The last game saw Ponty win away at Cilfynydd 46-0 on Wednesday 13th October 1993. Cil’s last visit to Sardis came on 29th December 1984 with the match finishing in a three-all draw. Those are the official stats, however, our Club Historian Alun Granfield has recently unearthed the fact matches between the two sides goes back even further than 1946 – during the work Alun has been doing of the very early days of Ponty RFC he has found that the first ever game against Cilfynydd was played on the People’s Park, a ground now occupied by the Lidl supermarket and the school, on 23rd November 1903, when Pontypridd won by a dropped goal, then worth four points.

Cilfynydd now play their home games at The Welfare Ground and this will be familiar to Ponty fans who travelled to watch the Valley Commandos play Clifton in a pre-season friendly at the ground on Saturday 19th August 2017.

Ponty will head into this Saturday’s match against Cilfynydd off the back of a pleasing performance, albeit in defeat against Newport on Saturday just gone. This week’s match will be yet another opportunity for the Pontypridd coaching team to continue putting the building blocks in place whilst giving game time to the whole squad ahead of the competitive matches starting next month.
