Bargoed v Pontypridd – Match Preview

On Saturday 10th May Pontypridd RFC play their final Admiral Premiership match of the current season away against Bargoed RFC. It takes place at Bargoed Park and kicks off at the usual time of 2:30pm.

The two teams have met each other twice this season, firstly in the league at Sardis Road and then at the quarter-final stage of the Welsh Cup at Bargoed Park, and it was Ponty who triumphed in both encounters by scorelines of 34-19 and 29-28 respectively.

Pontypridd are locked into a 2nd placed finish whilst Bargoed will end the campaign in 4th place in this season’s league standings, but there is still a big prize riding on Saturday’s result – the match at Bargoed Park has turned out to be an unofficial Mid District Premiership Cup semi-final with the winning team taking their place in the final against Merthyr the following Saturday.

Both clubs have enjoyed excellent campaigns and are just one more win away from a shot at the third and final piece of silverware on offer this season. For Pontypridd there’s the huge added incentive of winning their second trophy of the season, and at Sardis Road. But it’s going to take one last huge effort to beat Bargoed to qualify for the final – pob lwc bois!

The Team News…

Despite the bruising encounter against Neath a week last Wednesday Ponty have made just three changes to the XV that played the Welsh All Blacks at Sardis Road, and there are two new faces on the bench.

The sole change in the backs sees Lucus Welch being drafted back into the matchday squad to start at scrum-half.

In the forwards the two changes come in the loosehead and tighthead prop berths with Ben Stephens and Morgan Bosanko earning recalls in the front row.

The two new faces on the bench are Dan Cotterell and Rhodri Smith.
