Hyrox, Sprinting & Injury Rehab
I haven’t sent anything out from Rugby Fitness Training in a while because I’ve been coaching in other areas of health and performance over the last couple of years. But I figured it was time to check in… I would love to hear from you –
What kind training you are doing at the moment?
If you’re still playing, coaching, or just training for yourself, now’s a great time to take stock. The off-season is just around the corner, and with it comes the best window of the year to make serious gains in your fitness and rugby performance.
Since I last emailed, a few things I wanted to comment upon include:
Hyrox – This has exploded across the fitness world. It actually aligns quite well with rugby training, though it leaves a few gaps around sprinting and max speed work. I will write more on this in a future email as it is a whole topic in itself.
Nothing Beats Sprint Training For Getting Faster – I know this sounds obvious but most players try to lift their way to get faster and forget about doing actual speed work. So, you see them in the gym, but never see them on the track.
Since I first wrote my book Rugby Fitness Training: A Twelve Month Conditioning Plan in 2006 I have been banging the drum about how most rugby training usually skips doing pure sprint work, especially in club sessions. It really would fit in well with the classic Thursday run through session where there is plenty of standing around and rest periods..
Injury Rehab – I have done a lot of studying around injury rehab, posture and injury prevention over the last year or two. I will cover much more of that in future messages but this is an area yet to evolve itself, especially at amateur club rugby level from what I have seen.
Rugby – There have been plenty of the ups and downs in world rugby. For me, Wales being on a massive run of defeats has not been too much to talk about ???? On the fitness side of things, Louis Rees Zammit’s move to the NFL was of great interest. I have discussed the NFL vs Rugby in previous blogs, I will come back this topic in a future email.
Photos – I have done a couple of Hyrox events and got a second place in an over-40s bodybuilding show since the last newsletter. See here>>
