Bonymaen v Pontypridd – Matchday Preview
Next up is for Pontypridd RFC is an Admiral Premiership away day against Bonymaen RFC. The match will take place under the Parc Mawr lights on Friday evening 14th March, kick-off at 7:30pm.
Friday will see a return to league action for Ponty for the first time in a month, our last Admiral Premiership outing was on Saturday 15th February against Cardiff Met at Sardis Road. Since then two ‘free weekends’ have come either side of the team’s excellent performance and win against Newbridge in the Welsh Cup semi-final on Saturday 1st March at The Gnoll.
This week’s visit to Parc Mawr will be the first ever for Pontypridd. All three prior meetings between Ponty and Bony have taken place at Sardis Road, the last being a 47-7 win for the Valley Commandos back on Saturday 2nd November 2024. The two previous encounters between the two clubs both came in the Welsh Cup. The first meeting took place on 20/12/1997 with Ponty winning by 43 points to 3, the second encounter saw a similar 47-12 scoreline in the home side’s favour on 27/2/1999.
The Six Nations always causes disruption to the fixture schedule, but there have been matches taking place on various days and times over the weeks. Whilst Ponty didn’t have a game over the weekend second-placed Merthyr did away at Cross Keys – the second meeting between the two clubs in eight days following their cup semi-final on St. David’s Day. It’s fair to say that the Ironmen avenged their cup loss and some – they won 73-0 at Pandy Park and closed the gap to table-topping Ponty to just four points with a game in hand.
Bonymaen currently occupy 11th position in the table and are fighting tooth and nail to maintain their Premiership status for next season. During this campaign they have enjoyed wins against Newcastle Emlyn, Newbridge and Cross Keys at Parc Mawr, and last month narrowly lost by 22 points to 19 against Bargoed at their home ground.
Friday’s encounter is a must-win for both teams for different reasons, and with the excitement at both ends of the table now ramping right up we’ll see you in Swansea #PontyFans
