Pontypridd v Cardiff Met – Matchday Preview

0 1

This Saturday 15th February Pontypridd RFC host Cardiff Met at Sardis Road in the Admiral Premiership, kick-off will be 2:30pm.

Ponty and The Archers met back on Saturday 19th October at Cyncoed Campus and tries from Cally James, Cai James, Joe Miles, Louis Rochefort-Shugar, Lucus Welsh and Stuart Floyd-Ellis contributed to a 42-12 win. That match ended a near-eight year absence of games between the clubs, the previous encounter prior to that was on Saturday 28th January 2017 in the Welsh Cup when the Valley Commandos triumphed 43-12.

Pontypridd extended their winning run in the league last Friday evening following a full-blooded battle with Cross Keys at Sardis. Ponty fell to a 19-0 deficit halfway through the first period, but they once again showed their character to roar back and seal a 43-31 win and maintain their place at the top of the standings. Cardiff Met are enjoying a solid season in the Premiership following their promotion and currently reside in 7th place having beat Llangennech 25-22 two Saturdays ago.

This Saturday’s match will be Ponty’s last league match prior to a ‘free’ weekend next Saturday and our Welsh Cup semi-final against Newbridge on St. David’s Day.

THE JOHN PUGH MEMORIAL SHIELD:

The two sides will once again be competing for the John Pugh Memorial Shield. As well as an ex-Ponty player, John was a former Pro-Vice Chancellor and Chairman of Cardiff Met RFC for over 30 years, before his sad passing in October 2023. As well as John, Cardiff Met and Pontypridd have had many players represent both clubs over the years – Geraint Lewis, Neil Hennessy, Gareth Baber and Simon Humberstone, to name a few in more recent times. It is due to these links that at the start of the season Cardiff Met chose Pontypridd as the club that they would like to compete against for the John Pugh Memorial Shield – Ponty are the current holders following the team’s win at Cyncoed earlier in the season, but it will be up for grabs once again this weekend at Sardis Road.
