A successful weekend for our Wheelchair Rugby team!

0 6

The first league weekend (of three) for our first team was held in Stoke Mandeville on 19th and 20th October 2024. The team, in it’s debut season, were invited to enter Division 1, and were drawn into Pool B to face off against last years Division 1 winners, West Country Hawks, West Coast Heat and London Crusaders. The team would be led by new Head Coach, Paul Shaw, who delivered his first training session on the Thursday before.

Tigers came through the first day with three wins, topping the group and qualifying for Sunday’s semi-finals where the team would play for the top four positions.

The game of the weekend was the semi-final against West Coast Burn. The game finished level after full-time, leading to an overtime period of 3 minutes for one team to come out as winners. Tigers won the tip-off meaning we had control of the scoring however, Burn equalised with 4 seconds of overtime left. Needing to work the ball from one end to other, the team managed get the ball to the halfway line and call a timeout with one second on the clock. A long ball from Brice Maurel, was caught by Tyler Walker in the key, and he managed to just get over the try line intime (luckily for us there are no TMO’s in Wheelchair Rugby!).

This win put us through to the final against the other unbeaten side, RGC 1404. RGC started the game strongly, coming out the first quarter with a 2 try lead. However, a searing second quarter from Tigers, which led to a 6 point swing, meant we were ahead at halftime. The team managed to pull away in the second half, winning the match by 10 tries, and finishing the weekend in first place.

The next Division 1 league weekend is the 4th and 5th January 2025 and the team will be looking to build on this excellent start to the season.
