Liam Marshall backed to succeed after new Wigan deal – as coach or accountant

LIAM Marshall has been told he would make a brilliant coach in the future – just as he would a brilliant accountant.

The Wigan winger has signed a new four-year contract after establishing himself as one of Super League’s best.

And current boss Matt Peet believes his story – how he almost never played professionally and became an accountant, the numerous serious injuries he has overcome and the personal adversity he has experienced – give him that mentality that makes him succeed.

He said: “Whatever he decides to do, Liam’s one of those.

“If he takes that same attitude, which he will do, if he decides to be a coach, an accountant, whatever he decides to do, with his approach to life I think he’ll be a success.

“At the club, we have pictures and memory walls and there’s a placard up with a picture of Liam and the tale of his journey. It’s about never giving in and never quitting. He’s testament to that.

“There are probably times when he doubted himself – there’s the injuries he’s been through as well. He’s had several setbacks, on and off the field, and he deserves all the success he gets.”

Wigan face Leigh tonight after the round two game was postponed to fit in their World Club Challenge glory and the Warriors won the Challenge Cup.

And Peet concedes they are now facing the real Leopards after injuries wrecked their start to the season, with former boss Adrian Lam playing a huge part in keeping them on track.

He added: “Leigh are an excellent team and have some of the best attacking shape in the competition. Adrian’s got them firing.

“We never doubted he would and it’s testament to him he kept the team on track during those tough periods.”
