Morgan played five times for Wales during his career.

He was called up for the Lions during their 1980 tour but he did not feature in any of the test matches.

The star played in every three-quarter position for both the Lions and Wales.

In 1979, Peter Morgan played for the Llanelli sevens team which secured victory in the Snelling Sevens.

His outstanding performance earned him the Everson Award as the player of the tournament.

After retiring Morgan also served as an independent member of Pembrokeshire County Council for 16 years.

During his tenure, he served as a chair and vice-chair of the authority and was on the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority.

Morgan’s surviving family members include his wife, Helen, as well as his daughters, Nia and Lowri, along with his grandchildren, Seren and Dewi.

The Scarlets said in a statement: “Scarlets are deeply saddened to learn that our former player Peter Morgan has passed away.

“Peter played 275 matches for the Scarlets, scoring 90 tries and captained the club to victory over Australia in 1984.

“Our thoughts are with Peter’s family and friends at this sad time.”

Wales legend Jonathan Davies posted: “So sad. Moggs was a great player. RIP Peter.”

Welsh Rugby Union Geraint John said: “Sad news to hear of the passing of Peter Morgan.

“A great player but more than that – a fantastic person from Pembrokeshire/Little Haven/Hwest. Sending love & thoughts to Helen, Nia, Lowri & all family & friends from myself & all @WelshRugbyUnion.”

Commentator Phil Steele said: “Very sad to hear of the passing of ex-Llanelli, Wales and Lions 3/4 Peter Morgan. A superb player and character of Pembrokeshire.

“No visit to Broad Haven or Little Haven was complete without a cheery “How are you boy?” from Morgs – always wearing shorts, even in winter! RIP.”
