HUW IS HONORARY LIFE MEMBER
Luctonians past player, Club Secretary for two decades and renowned raconteur and scribe HUW DAVIES, was presented with Luctonians Life Membership on Saturday 27th May, during the wonderfully attended WLS IT Solutions tables day.
A huge congratulations to the old-timer for all he has contributed over the years at Luctonians – thoroughly deserved and his short, but typically to the point, acceptance speech was received with great hilarity, by all those who attended the lunch [If you know, you know. Ed 
]. He did follow up with a letter to the club, which we reproduce below, but firstly the presentation address by Luctonians President, Richard Corbett (Picture R):
‘According to the club’s history oracle (otherwise known as Norm) Huw Davies hobbled into Luctonians clubhouse in December 1945 with two broken legs in his demob suit and demanded a playing membership. He had recently moved back to the UK from the Bahamas where he had been severely injured by a drunk driver in a hit and run incident while saving a child crossing the road. On waking up in hospital his first words where a declaration that he would play rugby again.
It took him two years to recover sufficiently to play but he did and quickly discovered that the only way he could guarantee a game every Saturday was to become Captain of the 4thXV where he could pick the team, which he did successfully for many seasons.
To celebrate his 50th, he organised a game against the Buccaneers Rugby Club from Nassau. Unfortunately, the opposition won and denied Huw and the Fourths an unbeaten season.
He went on to be Club Secretary for 21 years and spent many years writing the match reports in his own inimitable style. I quote:
“The names on the Peterborough team sheet might have looked like a demented game of scrabble but the letters combined to provide Lucs with a testing afternoon”
“Lucs sent on several pairs of fresh legs in the second half and Alex Davidson quickly made his presence felt, before being yellow carded for a tackle of such ferocity, that it dislodged the Laurentian hooker’s Equity card.”
Huw has travelled in support of the 1stXV as an Alacadoo for 3 decades, and he organised the club’s tour to Ireland in 1988 where he ref’d the match against the County Wexford Champions Enniscorthy RFC possibly ensuring that we won.
He was also a member on the first tour to the Hong Kong Sevens in 1998 and for the past 14 years he has been a member of the Wombles, a group of volunteers who turn up every week to tidy and maintain the clubhouse and grounds. Having just turned 80, it appears that his role with this group has changed to one of coffee monitor, while acting as carer for Lord Cheshire. Phil no doubt claims the same in reverse.
Huw is first and foremost a proud Welshman from Llandovery where his father was Club Chairman for many years. Rugby and its culture is therefore in his blood and he has handed it on to his son Andrew, who has just received a National award from the Canadian Rugby Union for his voluntary work to develop the game there.
Huw, in recognition of the substantial contribution that you have made to the club over many years, it is my great pleasure to present you with an Honorary Life Membership of Luctonians.‘
Huw’s written response to the club [see his initial verbal acceptance above] was:
‘The expression on my face when I was presented with Honorary Life Membership of Luctonians at the lunch last Saturday said it all. I was astonished to the extent that when handed the microphone I failed to provide an appropriate response but came up with some frivolous throw away line.
This then is a belated but sincere thank you to those people who deemed me worthy of such an honour. I have joined a short but distinguished list of club legends (what am I doing there I ask?) and could not be more honoured or delighted. My forty years plus involvement with Luctonians has been a sheer delight and if I have made a contribution in any way then the pleasure I have received in return has far outweighed any time or effort I have contributed.
To have received this accolade in what has been undoubtedly the club’s most successful season makes it doubly rewarding and can I please offer my congratulations and thanks to the legion of people who have made this possible. As an erstwhile rolling stone I now have three Honorary Life Memberships but compared to the plastic badges and KFC vouchers that went with the other two, this one is The George Cross.‘
