Luctonians 43 v 0 Blaydon
Luctonians RFC v Blaydon RFC
Saturday 26th March 2022
Mortimer Park
Match Reporter: Geoff Vickress
On what was a glorious spring day at Mortimer Park the home side continued their excellent run of form and put in an excellent all round performance to keep their well-travelled opponents from Blaydon, who have been free scoring in previous games, to a zero score-line.
Lucs dominated throughout and their defence, even when Blaydon looked to get on the front foot, was resolute and they deservedly won relatively easily.
From as early as the 2nd minute a driving maul saw Aiden Cheshire over the line with Louis Silver adding the extras for a 7-0 lead. At this stage the home side looked like they would score on every trip to the Blaydon 22 and it was no surprise when Connor Deignan barged his way over after 7 minutes, Silver again converting for an early 14-0 lead.
Lucs were a player down on 14min when Oscar Rowley was carded for a technical infringement, but they continued to dominate. And from a driving maul they were awarded a penalty try when Blaydon’s Alex Dodds was adjudged to have dragged down a driving maul in the red zone and subsequently received a yellow card for his efforts.
Blaydon suffered from injuries throughout and it was no surprise that the game went to uncontested scrums for 7 mins before half time with Blaydon unable to field a front row, half time seeing the home side 21-0.
Half Time Score
Luctonians RFC 21 v 0 Blaydon RFC
Blaydon started brightly at the beginning of the second half, but they had no answers to a buoyant Luctonians who started to play with some aplomb, and they duly ran amok in the second half, adding 4 more tries.
Ben Link was driven over after 50 minutes, and debutant Will Pearson ran in to score after 57mins, neither try converted. Charlie Grimes’ try was the score of the game when he crossed the whitewash following a flowing passing move from Lucs across the full pitch to run in after 59mins.
Blaydon continued to struggle and with injuries the game eventually lasted well over the 80 minutes. Owien Harriott-Davis added the final Lucs try when he stretched to touch down on 69 minutes, Tom Jones converting for the final score of 43-0.
Brad Smith for Lucs received a late yellow for a technical infringement which was disappointingly appropriated as the game was over and neither side needed the extra minutes as the clock ran over to best part of 100 minutes.
Lucs will be well pleased to continue this run of form and travel next week to Fylde, who they had beaten earlier in the season, full of confidence.
