Luctonians RFC v Tynedale RFC

Saturday 15th January 2022
Mortimer Park

Match Reporter: Geoff Vickress

Lucs were full value for the win against their long distance opponents from Tynedale, played in what were cold, dreary, murky and very sticky conditions. They played with confidence and kept Tynedale camped in their own half for long periods and despite the high incidence of knock-ons from both sides with ball being very greasy they eased away in the first half to a 24 point lead before Tyndale got on the score board on the stroke of half time.

Owen Randell knocked over from a penalty the first points after only 3 minutes, before the hard working Sam Jones scored from a driving maul on 18, with Randell converting for a 10 point lead. The excellent Connor Deignan crashed over on the half hour to further increase their lead, Randell again converting before Owien Harriet-Davis scrambled through to touch down just before the half time whistle, Randell again with the extras.

But Tynedale, with their only meaning-full adventure in Lucs territory, drove over from a late driving maul to earn 5 points through Chris Wearmouth, with Jake Rodgers converting at oranges.

During the HT break, a rapturous round of applause was given to Gordon Nicholas who played for Lucs in their inaugural season in 1948.
Visiting with his wife, daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren he had travelled from Bristol and received a great reception as he is only one of two players who are still with us. Gordon was Lucs’ top try scorer in the augural season as well.

Half Time Score

Luctonians RFC  24  v  7  Tynedale RFC

Tynedale struggled throughout to have any territorial gain in Lucs half and were pushed back on the scoreboard when Owen Randell slotted another penalty just after the restart.

The dancing Will Burton finished off a smart handling move by the Black & Whites on the hour to give Lucs a 4 try bonus point and a 32-7 lead which they never looked like relinquishing.

Despite plenty of pressure, Tynedale defended heroically and managed to sneak a late consolation try when they crashed through again from a driving maul late in the second half. Ralph Johnstone scoring following good work by their forwards with Rodgers converting to complete the scoring with the home side excellent value for this bonus point.
