Luctonians RFC v Fylde RFC

Luctonians upset the dominance of the top 5 teams in Nat2 North, where not one had previously lost to a team outside the top 6 this season, by winning a highly competitive game played in a biting cold strong wind.

Fylde started confidently and from the kick off with their backs making early in-roads through the home side’s defence, and were rewarded when Matt Garrod finished off a flowing move after only 3 minutes, Tom Forster converting for an early 7 point advantage.

Lucs came back into the game when they engineered a line out from a Fylde infringement deep in their 22 and from quick scrum ball they moved the ball out wide to the returning Frank Kelly to crash through out wide to reduce the arrears to only 2 points, Lucs missing the extras.

Fylde continued to play some flowing rugby but came up against a well drilled and organised Lucs who defended stoically for long periods and denied their opponents any gain line success. The home side eventually gained the upper hand and started to put Fylde under pressure, and they conceded a penalty in front of the posts which Owen Randell knocked over to give the home side a 8-7 lead at half time.

From the restart Lucs gained early ground and straight away took advantage from a driving maul, Scott Rawlings was yellow carded for Fylde, and Lucs were awarded the penalty try for a 15-7 lead they were not to lose.

The home side were excellent throughout the second half and the high number of knock-ons which were not to be unexpected in the arctic winds, saw them win numerous set piece advantage and possession dominance. Fylde did claim a second try when Charlie Partington touched down following a kick and chase, with Smith again adding the extras to bring the score down to just a single point advantage for the home side. And Fylde had to spend the last 10 minutes with 14 men as Gregory for Fylde saw yellow for a shoulder to the head.

Lucs played out the game with excellent territory control and with a great deal of maturity to close the game, despite not adding to their score and they were well worthy of the winning points.
