A big crowd welcomed rugby back to Luctonians for their first home game since February 2020 with an entertaining open flowing game against Loughborough Students. Both sides played throughout with plenty of endeavour with the students eventually getting the better of a hard-working home side.
Students started strongly and despite missing a 1st minute penalty scored when James Langstone stole through following a Lucs error from 22mtrs. Smith converting from in front of the posts (0-7). When Thomas Miles added the students second try following good work from Agbongbon, despite a suspicious forward pass, it appeared the afternoon was going to be a difficult one for the home side. But they rallied and playing open rugby were duly rewarded when Aiden Cheshire was driven over from a driving maul to reduce the arrears to 5-14.
Man of the match, Lucs big second row Owien Harriott-Davis was then unlucky not to score when he just lost out in a sprint from halfway following a kick through and chase to Students full back Tom Smith who dotted down fractionally first in safety. The home side were now in the ascendancy and pulled 3 points back when Owen Randell popped over a penalty on the half hour following a students indiscretion (8-14). But against the run of play and under pressure, Boro scored when James Daniel ran a diagonal line from his own 22 through the home defence to further increase their lead.
Roared on by the home crowd Lucs stole themselves back into the match bang on half time when Sam Jones went over the whitewash following good forward pressure. Randell again converting for a 15-21 score line.

The home side started the second half with plenty of purpose and Sam Jones scored his second try following another driving maul and excellent work by the hard working Aiden Cheshire, Randell again converting to give Lucs a deserved lead (22-21) And with the home side driving forward for more points Students snatched back the advantage when fullback Smith broke through from halfway, and despite a great tackle by the chasing Charlie Grimes, Tom Miles for the students picked up the loose ball before Lucs could make safe to score and he converted his own try for the winning score of a very entertaining encounter (22-28)
