They are referred to as 'four pointers' as they have the potential to create a 4 point swing.
Using the above example ...
If team A (currently on zero points) plays team B (2 points) and team A wins both now have 2 points. If team B wins however, they have 4 points and team A still zero, a four point difference, hence the phrase.
It's arguable that this applies to all games but the phrase tends to be used when teams are in similar positions i.e. top of the table clashes or relegation battles.
... but the suspicion is that you knew that anyway.
