Wigan Warriors • Hypothetical

Can anyone give a definitive answer? Imagine that an attacking team was camped on the opponents line. The ball is correctly played and the player receiving the ball has a player charging on to what would otherwise be a crash ball. Instead of a lateral pass the ball is "passed upwards and slightly backward and the receiver jumps to the full extent of their reach to gather the ball whilst forward momentum takes them over the try line. Is there any way of legally stopping the player with the ball before the player makes contact with the playing surface. Or is the tackled in the air rule only for kicks?
