Luctonians 3 v 31 Caldy
Luctonians RFC 3 v 31 Caldy RFC
Saturday 18th January 2020
By Geoffers
Caldy will be pleased to have picked up the points against a very game Luctonians who, despite the score line, kept them honest throughout. The Home side will also feel they should have got more from this match against the league leaders as they spent much of the match in their opponent’s half.
Caldy showed their title ambitions however, with a superb defensive effort and picked off the Lucs side with 4 excellently executed tries. Nick Royle put the first points on the board for Caldy after 18 minutes following off a fine move from their ever-swift backline, with Star Man, Gavin Roberts, kicking the extras for the first of his 16 points. Roberts added a penalty on the half hour to increase the league leaders’ advantage, before Louis Silver kicked Lucs only points from the tee on 34 mins.
The home crowd were up in arms shortly after when Max Hill was put clear through and looked like reducing the deficit, only to be brought back to be penalised for was a very dubious forward pass decision from the officials. Caldy rallied and from the resulting kick pressurised Lucs from a driving maul for Adam Aigbokhae to break away and run in a score, with the deadly boot of Roberts again adding the extras.
Half Time Score
Luctonians 3 v 17 Caldy
The half time score looked ominous for the home side, and it looked even more so as from the re-start Lucs passed themselves into trouble allowing Mike Barlow to intercept and put Lewis Barker in for the easiest of scores.
The home side dug deep and the home favourite Josh Watkins showed his class on a couple of occasions to keep Caldy on their toes. And Lucs manufactured their downfall further, when following a yellow card for Frank Kelly for a deliberate knock on, Lucs attempted a cross field kick which was picked off easily by Hayes for Caldy whose side step put the whole defensive line wrong footed and allowed Roberts to benefit for Caldys’ bonus points.
Lucs were as always roared on by the vocal home crowd and were unlucky, as the clock ran down, not to gain a penalty try when the away side were penalised continually in their own red zone, Tom Sanders seeing yellow for killing the ball. But the league leaders rode their luck and deservedly travelled home with another bonus point win which consolidates their position as league leaders and almost certainty as promoted back into National One.
