Greggers’ invitation of a trip up the Motorway to Hinckley had to to be by-passed, as house and garden chores before the Sunday rain had to be finished, before the daily trudge again kicks in as it does every Monday (Or else! Ed.). Mind you, the hedges, lawns and beds now all look A1 and Knocker would be given top marks if it was his pitch down at Mortimer Park.

The Ones and the travelling band of supporters would have been anticipating a possible winning result at Hinckley, who had lost their first couple of games this season thus far. It was not to be, as the hosts ran out winners 23-17. Using Greggers and other excellent posts on the old Bookface I have rounded up the action for you in some kind of irrelevant order.

De Montfort Park looked a picture with bright sunshine and not a cloud to be seen, not yet anyway, looking at the pictures posted. Lucs over for first score after only 5 minutes, when Callum Young drove through from a driving maul close to the Host’s 5-metre line, converted by Josh Phipps and lead 0-7.

Hinckley then had us on the back foot as we defended stoutly for next 20 minutes, keeping them away from the red zone. Their pressure eventually told, and they pulled a score back before we added another 3 again from the boot of Josh Phipps, with a penalty before half time; to go in for the oranges at 5-10. Plenty of support on BookFace, not least from Canada with Margaret Turner sending best wishes.

Must have been something in the Hinckley Oranges as they appear to have come out second half all guns firing, and 2 quick tries, neither converted, followed by a penalty saw them leading 18-10. With Mike Cheasley off to the bin for what must have been an innocuous decision, well it was from what I can see on the live feed. I do know that Scott Hamilton scored their final try and he was supposed to have retired a month ago, what’s he doing playing then?

23-10, and a need to score to secure at least a bonus point, saw a do or die effort from the boys when Owen Randell nipped through from behind a mass of players, having been set up by good forwards pressure, from close in. Josh Phipps again added the extras for a 23-17 score at fulltime. Two defeats on the bounce but early days yet in what was always going to be a tough start to the season, especially when looking at the fixture list when it landed back in August.

Max Hill was Lucs Man of Match, but contributions from debutant Josh Phipps, would be well worth noting and Owen Randell getting his first score for the Firsts, in what was only his third appearance.

It should also be noted that one of lasts seasons Namibians who played at Lucs, Helarius Kisting, LIKED a Greggers posting on the Bookface, whilst preparing for their WORLD CUP tie with Italy. He came on and played most of second half in Japan while our other Namibian Max Katjijeko played all the second half. It appears that neither saw a lot of action, with Max making a couple of tackles and one run with ball in hand, with H making a couple of passes and a couple of tackles also.

And so, on to next Saturday, BIG GAME, not least in importance for a result on what will be Lucs In Pink Day. Big fundraiser event for the Luctonians Charity Group and with Chester the opponents, the boys will be looking to secure the first home victory of the season.

It should also be noted that the most important event of the Lucs Social calendar takes place on Sunday 6^th October. This is a superb afternoon of general bonhomie, with excellent cuisine and drinks, to celebrate yet another successful season by the Luctonians Pétanque Society.
