I am always in London on the August bank holiday and always stay at student accommodation.

They are basic rooms with shared facilities (though private are available) and most are all walking distance from Leicester Sq.

If you aren't choosy and if you just want a bed for the night and a bit of breakfast in the morning in a school canteen place then High Holborn or Carr-Saunders (Full English) are places I've stayed at and are about as cheap as you can get in London.
