Pensioner, 77, choked to death while eating a steak at restaurant, inquest heard
A PENSIONER choked to death while eating a steak during a birthday meal at a restaurant, an inquest heard.
Chas Chalmers’ son Daniel slapped the 77-year-old on the back and an off-duty nurse tried to resuscitate him.
Chalmers was a respected rugby coach who was well known in his community.
He died soon after arriving in hospital.
Friend Andrew Spittle told the Exeter inquest: “It all happened very quickly.
“I don’t think anyone could have done anything differently.”

Close friend Andrew Spittle told the Exeter inquest that how their circle of friends had a tradition of going out for a ‘gentleman do dinner’ when it was one of their birthdays.
He said:”It all happened very quickly from the time of him coughing to collapsing.
“In my estimation it was no more than two minutes.
“I honestly don’t think anyone could have done anything differently.”
Coroner Philip Spinner recorded accidental death.
