At a glorious Rodney Parade, the Ponty faithful were out in force and in even greater voice as Huw Dowden took to the pitch for his 250th game.
Ponty started as they meant to go on with the forwards providing clean, quick ball to the three quarters. Capt Daf made a rampaging charge to the line for Newport to turn over and threw to the winger who was halted by a stern Ponty defence.
With a great take at the Newport line out by Pontys Sion Edwards , the swift hands of the backs saw full back Gary Williams make a break. With swift passing by Webber & Joel Raikes , Newport’s defence resulted in a penalty to Ponty for holding on .
Sweeny kicked the penalty making it 3-0.
With both teams hungry for possession and Newport making the errors , a missed penalty by Sweeny at 15 mins.
A great phase by the Ponty three quarters showing pace and flair resulted in Alex Webber tearing down the touchline and be bundled into touch.
Ponty dominated the line out and again the three quarters spread the ball to Corey Howells on the wing who scored. Ceri Sweeny converted making it 0 – 10 to Ponty.
Both teams tried to play a quick and expansive game and it was the visitors that punched holes in the Newport defence at every given opportunity. Captain Daf Lockyer lead the charge after a great break by the ever present Sion Edwards. An off load to scrum half Joel Raikes saw Alex Webber sprint for the line and score a great try on 33 mins.
From kick off, Ponty again won the possession and moved the ball quickly. After Newport were penalised for a wild line out throw in , Ponty maintained the pressure and won a penalty which was kicked by Sweeny at 37 mins , making it 0 – 18.
Ponty’s defence stood firm and thwarted the Newport attack and turned over possession and the referee took Ponty back for the scrum.
43 mins saw Newport claw back a try after a quick tap penalty by the outside half which saw Pascoe score the try which was converted by the outside half.
Half time score Newport 7 – 18 Ponty.
From kick off, Ponty pressure dominated and the three quarters spread the ball to Corey Howells for his second try which was converted by Sweeny. The score in 7-25.
With Newport penalised for pulling down a great line kick and another line out resulted in a great off load by Daf Lockyer to the ever hungry Alex Knott to score. Ceri Sweeny converted making the score 7-32.
From kick off, Newport knocked the ball forward and the ever dominant scrum continued to cause havoc and resulted in Newport conceding penalty for off side at the scrum.
Continued pressure by Ponty saw a fantastic interception by Alex Knott who galloped from inside his own half to score under the posts. Sweeny converted.
With changes at 63 minutes, fresh legs added to Newports misery and a yellow card for taking a player out without the ball took them down to 14 men.
Corey Howells ran in for his third try at 78 mins, converted by Lewis K Williams. With the score now at 46-7 Pontys defence stood firm.
The fantastic fans showed their appreciation to the team as chants of Ole Ole Ole rang at Rodney Parade
