Signed off on WPL’18 by quoting Henry ‘Blowers’ Blofeld. Fitting therefore that WPL’19 begins by citing page 7 of his book “Cricket and All That – An Irreverent History” (few spare coppers – sounded more – in the charity box at Tesco, Atherton (nowhere near as much as HRJ seemingly deposited in Tesco, Wigan)). This on the origin of Lords Cricket Ground:
“.....the White Conduit Club was formed and they played their first match in 1785. There was one fly in the ointment. The general public were admitted to the White Conduit Fields and the toffs didn’t like it a bit. If they made a duck or dropped a sitter they didn’t want to see the great unwashed laughing their heads off all around the boundary. If they were going to make fools of themselves, they wanted to do it in private. As a result, in 1786, the ninth Earl of Winchilsea, a stickler for privacy, and Colonel Charles Lennox, the nephew of the third Duke of Richmond, met with Thomas Lord.....”
It has to be admitted that Bongser gave scant notice for the inaugural Leythe WPL. He, however, hopes that some more of the toffs and gentry on the Leigh forum will this season dare risk spilling the ball on the line or missing a “must” tackle to a chorus of howls from the stands.
