It could be argued that they would have gone belly up no matter what point sir Alex chose to leave. Him not being there was always going to leave a huge hole, maybe it would have been better if he left when they were the best, left on top and left a new manager with giggs, Scholes, van nistelrooy, Gary neville etc. This would leave a new manager with the best team in the league to build his own success from but considering they kept winning the risk probably wasn't worthwhile.
