The contract could have a termination clause in the case of relegation. If not the contract remains in force with a requirement to pay the players. If the players are not paid the legal entity of Widnes would be in breach of contract leaving the players with a cause of action to sue but this would be pointless as there is little money to pay out damages and they would join the long list of creditors with HMRC being first in line.
