When and why did people start writing "BWAHAHA" as an onomatopoeia for laughter instead of "HAHAHA"?  'Hahaha' is a very different expression, both audibly and emotionally, than 'Bwahahaha'/'Muhahaha'. 'Haha' is completely open from the start. It is an expression of pure, spontaneous joy and delight, as a response to a joke or seeing something funny. 'Bwaha'/'Muaha' starts out constrained with the mouth closed, then wells up and bursts out of its constraints. It is suggestive of finding oneself or one's own thoughts funny, and a recognition that either the idea itself or finding it funny is somehow wrong, perverse, or fiendish. It indicates an attempt and then a failure to reign in a socially inappropriate laugh. The containment-failure laugh has likely been around throughout human history - it's the kind of laugh-at-a-funeral thing. It was probably after the popularisation of Freudian psychoanalysis that people started recognizing it as a significant Id-Superego interplay and felt the need to distinguish it. The laugh itself gained traction in popular culture in the B-movie melodramas and horror films of the early-mid Twentieth Century, and was first rendered in text in the comics of that period. It was not until the self-awareness of Generation Y that its usage became so commonplace that it would appear to have entirely supplanted normal laughter and its written expression.In general it is a comment about one's persecution complex and is an example of feeling threatened in social media.....it basically is a childish mentality equivalent to children in a playground....it is regarded by many as an excuse to deride someone that they cannot compete with on an equal level.See More
