The writing was on the wall for this season from before we played Leeds in the cup. There were some brief hopes of a revival but one step forward was soon greeted with one step back. Any chances of promotion were based on hope rather than expectation.
The biggest mistake for me was not getting the half-backs right from the outset. Whatever level you play at, the half-backs are key. Sorting this would certainly be one of my priorities in 2018. I think we missed a fit Mason Tonks. The second row has never been dynamic enough. Think back to how much better we were in the Steve Snitch and Lee Waterman days.
The full-back slot hasn't been one of our strongest positions either. Tom Carr hasn't been the player he was. Louis Sheriff will run through a brick wall for you but we've been lacking a pacey full-back that puts fear into the defensive line when he joins in the attacks.
All-in-all, with these short-comings, we've been very ordinary for the most part.
Next season isn't going to be a walk in the park either with the teams we'll be coming up against but I'm optimistic about the future. I feel lessons will be learned and Richard Horne will do a very good job for us in 2018.
