Karate Kid: Legends can't beat Stitch or Ethan Hunt at the box office

0 73

Karate Kid: Legends put up a decent fight, but couldn’t strike down mammoth competitors like Lilo & Stitch and Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning at the box office. The Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio-led sequel sparred its way to $21 million in its opening weekend—a decent haul but lower than Deadline‘s initial projections.

Though the film will likely still turn a profit on its relatively low $45 million budget, the trade suggests that the success of Netflix’s Cobra Kai may have trained audiences to see Karate Kid as a watch it on your couch sort of franchise. (If true, a major victory for CEO Ted Sarandos’ war on movie theaters.) That doesn’t seem to be the case for Lilo & Stitch and Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning, which are still doing solid numbers in their respective second weeks. The little blue alien crashed into the top spot once again this week with an impressive $63 million, while M:I grabbed $27 million. That’s promising momentum for the Tom Cruise film, which has already flown to $354 million worldwide, but it will have to keep it up if it wants to surpass its massive $400 million budget.

This week’s list saw one other newcomer in Bring Her Back, Danny and Michael Philippou’s chilling follow-up to 2022 horror hit Talk To Me. With $7 million this weekend, Bring Her Back opened slightly lower than its possession-centric predecessor ($10 million). It’ll have to scare up some good cash next weekend if it wants to make it within the range of Talk To Me‘s $91 million total.
