Renshall and Fryer Strike Gold at the 2025 Sarajevo European Open

0 3

It was an excellent weekend for the GB squad at the Sarajevo European Open, with seven of the nine athletes securing top-seven finishes, including two golds, one silver, and one bronze.

Lucy Renshall (Stewart JA) made a perfect comeback to European tour competition, claiming gold in the -63kg category in her first international event since the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Starting her day in the quarter-final, she progressed smoothly through to the final, finishing atop the podium without conceding a single point, a remarkable result on her return.

In the -66kg division, Michael Fryer (Rush Judo) delivered a flawless performance, securing gold and marking his best result of the year. Not dropping a single point on his way to the top of the podium, Fryer is now well-positioned for his upcoming events at the Zagreb and Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Chelsie Giles (Coventry JC) continued her impressive form, taking silver in just her second competition of the year and her first since the Paris 2024 Olympics. This comes just weeks after securing bronze at the Prague European Open and competing in her new -57kg weight category, having previously fought at -52kg.

Rhys Thompson (Enfield JC) earned a well-deserved bronze in the -100kg category, securing his first medal of 2025 after an injury-hit season. This result sets him up perfectly for the upcoming Zagreb and Abu Dhabi Grand Prix events.

In the +100kg category, Wesley Greenidge (Enfield JC) finished strongly in 5th place, adding to his collection of 2025 results, which includes bronze medals at the Podgorica and Dubrovnik Senior European Cups, as well as a 7th-place finish at the La Nucia European Open.

Benjamin Caldwell (Camberley JC) maintained his strong 2025 form, finishing 5th in Sarajevo. This adds to his achievements this year, including bronze at the Dubrovnik Senior European Cup and 7th at the Amman Asian Open.

Also competing in the -57kg category alongside Chelsie Giles, Lanina Solley (Camberley JC) secured a strong 7th-place finish, her best result since April, showing promise as she works to regain her top form.

A great weekend from the whole team!
