Renshall bows out in the second round in Paris
On the fourth day of judo action at the Olympic Games, Lucy Renshall bowed out in the second round in Paris as she competed in the -63kg category.
Renshall, who was drawn against 5th seed Katherina Haecker (AUS) in the opening round, went a waza-ari score down as the contest passed the opening 60-seconds.
Renshall levelled the score moments later after picking up her first shido.
With nothing between the pair, the contest entered Golden Score where Renshall was awarded a second shido in the opening minute.
Renshall continued to dominate the contest and forced Haecker to concede three shidos in quick succession to progress to the second round.
In Round Two Renshall faced a familiar opponent in Lubjana Piovesana (AUT). Renshall dominated much of the contest but was unable to register a score, as has been the case when the pair have previously faced each other.
As the contest entered Golden Score, Renshall continued to dominate but was countered for a waza-ari score when attempting her trademark hip throw.
Speaking after the contest, Renshall said: “Judo is such a cruel sport. The last 12 weeks have been my best block of training ever, I came into today feeling good, fit and strong.
“I felt good after my first fight, but in judo it all comes down to who can register that score, and the better person won on the day.
“It has been a hard cycle, it is frustrating as I have given everything and it hasn’t gone my way. But that’s sport. We will take a rest now and see what comes next.”
