Obituary: Richard Lloyd

0 8

The British Judo family lost one of its own this weekend as Richard Lloyd sadly passed away as a result of the terrible Covid-19 outbreak.

Lloyd was the Head Coach of Isle of Man Judo for a number of years and took squads around the world competing in various events and competitions.

A talented sportsman, representing the Isle of Man in judo at national and international level at events such as the Island Games. He won a bronze medal in the World Police Fire and Rescue games, held in Stockholm, Sweden in 1999. As part of his passion for sport Richie managed the Isle of Man judo team and also worked with Special Olympics athletes. He was a true public servant in every sense of the role.

A “giant of a man” and “father figure”, he was a retired Police Sergeant who still had strong connections with the Merseyside Police Force, where he followed in the footsteps of his parents. He later moved to the Isle of Man to carry on his police service and became Head Coach of his local club.

Tributes have been pouring in from across the Island with the club and Police Force’s Facebook page posting:
