0 1

VILLENEUVE-D’ASCQ, France (AP) — Germany held on to beat Spain 25-24 and reach the men’s handball final at the Paris Olympics on Friday.

They were tied at 12-12 at the end of the first half, and with one minute left the 2016 Olympic bronze medalist Germany led 2020 bronze medalist Spain by one point.

Latvian-born Renars Uscins led Germany with six goals, while sharpshooter Daniel Fernandez scored on five of his six shots for Spain.

Germany’s opponent will be the winner of a later semifinal between three-time Olympic champion Denmark and Slovenia at Pierre Mauroy Stadium, located just outside the northern city of Lille.

The French women defend their title in Saturday’s final against Norway, which goes for its first Olympic title since 2012 and third overall.

Three-time champion Denmark faces Sweden earlier Saturday in the women’s bronze medal game.
