Video: Mourinho admits he is not on-board with calls for subjectivity in handball decisions

Jose Mourinho has admitted that he is not a fan of the Premier League’s decision to urge referees to be more subjective in their handball calls.

On the back of the recent changes in the new rules, there have been a spate of controversial decisions in the Premier League season so far, none more so that referee Peter Bankes’ decision to penalise Eric Dier for handball against Newcastle last weekend.

In response to the scathing criticism that some decisions have received, the Premier League reportedly asked the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), the body responsible for referees, to use more subjectivity in their calls.

Officials have been asked to take into account things like the player’s ability to react and his proximity to the ball.

However, Mourinho insisted that he is not a fan of the proposed calls for subjectivity as it usually ends up favouring some sides over the other.

Here’s what the Spurs boss said in his recent press conference about the proposed change (via Sky Sports):

I can certainly see where Mourinho is coming from. We cannot have too much room for interpretation if we want a level playing field. However, the handball law has always had an element of subjectivity to it, with things like the proximity of the player, reaction time and body position all influencing a decision.

Any effort to oversimplify the handball rules, especially when enforced with the scrutiny of VAR, is bound to be problematic. So, asking officials to use some subjectivity until the rules can be modified, is a step in the right direction.
