How many substitutes can you have in the Champions League?

THE bigwigs at Uefa are always looking for ways to move the game forward.

And their sweeping new changes for the Champions League next season will see an emphasis on stopping time wasting, getting handball decisions correct and overhauling penalties.

One of their ideas which will be brought in on June 1 though – in time for the Champions League final between Liverpool and Spurs – is an increase in the amount of players on the substitute bench.

In a change to Uefa regulations, up to 12 players will be allowed on the bench for European finals, starting from Liverpool’s clash with Tottenham.

This will come into force for the final and will be rolled out across the competition next season.

Is it different for the Europa League and Premier League?

CURRENTLY, there has been no official confirmation for changes to either of these competitions.

But with the rules being sanctioned by Uefa, expect them also to used in the Europa League.

Premier League clubs are expected, for the time being at least, to stick with the current seven on the bench rule.
