Bernardo Silva insists ‘no doubt’ Llorente goal should have been ruled out by VAR as Man City are KO’d by Spurs

BERNARDO SILVA insists there is “no doubt” that Tottenham’s winning goal at the Etihad was handball.

The ball seemed to strike Fernando Llorente’s arm before hitting his hip and bobbling past Manchester City keeper Ederson.

Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir allowed the goal to stand after a VAR check and it ultimately put Spurs in a Champions League semi-final clash against Ajax.

Ex-referee Mark Halsey and Rio Ferdinand both say the goal should not have stood.

City’s Bernardo, 24, says it was difficult to swallow but concedes they have to respect the referee’s decision.

He said: “I think VAR is a good thing because it helps the referee make better decisions. So, no problems with the VAR.

“Obviously I have had the opportunity to watch the last goal from Tottenham and the ball hits the hand – no doubt about that.

“But the referee takes his decision and we have to respect that.

“I think the way the team played was very good, it was fantastic, especially after going 2-1 down. But that’s football.

PREMIER LEAGUE FOCUS

“Now we have to focus on the Premier League and FA Cup, but it’s not a very good feeling to have.

“We are very disappointed. It is easy to say but I think we deserved better.

“But that’s it, that’s football. We have to accept it and next season we will try again.”

City now have just a couple of days to pick themselves up and be ready to face Tottenham again on Saturday morning.

That is a game that is crucial to both teams – particularly the champions who are going for back-to-back titles.

Bernardo said: “We need the three points, to win.

“Obviously we are very disappointed but on Thursday we will have to forget about it and go for the competitions we are still in.

“It’s not time for revenge, time for another competition, time to keep us alive in the title race.

“We will try to win the game in the same way we did on Wednesday, knowing that we are playing against a very good team.

“We know Liverpool are probably winning all their games so we have to win all our games.

“Our focus is to win three points after three points and at the end of it try to celebrate the title.”
