Handball Australia seeks sports journalism interns

Handball Australia is seeking journalism interns for a new media project to be launched in the upcoming months.

Handball Australia is the national governing body for the Olympic sport of handball, which has both indoor and beach disciplines. The Australian Handball Federation, operating under the business name Handball Australia (HA), is a non-profit organisation in which all representatives and positions are voluntary and unpaid. HA is a full member of the Oceania Continental Handball Federation and the International Handball Federation.

HA is aiming to establish more in-depth media coverage of handball competitions, athletes and other related news across Australia, targeting the official website as well as its various social media channels. For this purpose, HA is seeking students or recent graduates with an educational background in journalism, media, communication or similar.

The project will be led by Courtney Gahan, journalist for the International Handball Federation, journalist, editor and social media for the European Handball Federation and the EHF Champions League, website editor for the EHF EURO (2016 and 2018), and member of the International Sports Press Association Handball Commission. Interns will work directly under Courtney (based in Europe) via online channels, producing articles, interviews and competition reviews for the official HA website.

While HA is unable to offer monetary compensation for this internship programme, the opportunity to be published on the HA website represents the chance for your work to be seen and read around the world, and to build your portfolio while gaining valuable experience. The programme will be light in terms of workload, depending largely on how much interns wish to contribute and the size of the team.

Your profile:
- Bachelor degree in journalism, communications, media or similar
- A desire to work or gain experience in journalism or sports media
- High standard of written English

Knowledge of handball is a bonus, but not essential (yet!). International students are welcome to apply.

Intern tasks:
- Pitching feature and interview ideas, collaborating with editor
- Conducting interviews with players, coaches and handball officials around Australia
- Covering local and international competitions as a sports reporter

HA would like to introduce the programme in May 2018. As such, all applications must be received by April 30, 2018.

To submit your application, please send your CV, a brief portfolio or a sample of your writing, and a cover letter addressed to Courtney Gahan at media@handballaustralia.org.au. Any questions may also be sent to this address.
