Howard Webb: Thierry Henry changed football football after his famous handball
The France star controversially handballed home the winner in a 2010 World Cup play-off against Republic of Ireland.
And in that one moment, former top ref Webb’s whole perception of video technology in the game changed.
A Video Assistant Referee system is to be introduced in Major League Soccer from August 5, as well as from the third round of the coming season’s FA Cup.
And Webb, now the MLS’ manager of VAR operations, said: “My opinion changed with Henry’s handball with regard to the video replays assisting referees.
“On the back of the handball Swedish referee Martin Hansson didn’t referee at the World Cup in South Africa. He was fourth official but he would have been a ref.
