Cornish Bowl Match Report – 10th Oct 2021 – St Austell Narrowly lose out to “Cape”

The Bowl team were drawn away in the 1st round against Cape Cornwall Golf Club, in the new revised home/away format for this year, which gave “Cape” a strong home advantage on the day. The weather was kind to both teams with a small breeze and clearing sky’s giving exceptional views out towards the Scilly isles.

The 1st match up saw Graham Kingdon & Chris Knight and with St Austell having won the “toss” Graham took to the tee to lead the team out. All five pairings had superb first tee shots and got their matches off to a good start. Match 2- Andy Rosevear and Adam Haynes had a tight game throughout, but always had a measure of control eventually winning 1 up. Match 3 – were the father and son partnership of Chris and Dan Allen who from the start looked comfortable and played very well securing a confident win of 5&4. Match 4 – were the pairing of Colin Langley and Mark Pullen who had a tough game throughout against their opponents just like Graham and Chris with the home pairings taking home advantage to the extreme and playing the unique Cape Cornwall course strategically winning both points. This left the scores at even with 2 points each and the last match still out on the course.

Jamie Bullock and Steve Hayhurst were coming off a run of winning three holes in a row, getting their game back to 1 down going down the 14th in much better shape, only to be undone by a very narrow fairway and unable to find Jamie’s drive leaving Steve to take 3 off the tee losing the hole.

Up 15 the lads were giving their second of two shots and local knowledge came back to bite us from the tee again losing their ball and having to take a drop, eventually losing the hole. That had the match 3 up to Cape Cornwall with 3 to play going down 16, with both sets of teams and St Austell spectators gathered around watching on. Jamie drove his tee shot superbly under pressure, but they would sadly lose the hole and the match 4&2, giving Cape Cornwall a narrow 3&2 Win overall on a very tricky course.

I would like to thank the team very much and everyone played their part with 7, new faces coming into the squad and representing the club superbly, which isn’t easy but valued experience for next year. I would also like thank all the caddies and supporters from St Austell who made the long journey down to support the guys in their efforts.

Thanks again Bowl Team 2021.

Club Captain
