Buhari joins millions of Nigerians to congratulate Super Falcons after winning 9th AWCON title

- President Muhamadu Buhari has congratulated the Super Falcons for emerging victorious in Ghana

- The Nigerian women's team beat their South African counterpart to win their ninth AWCON title

- Other well meaning Nigerians have showered encomiums on the ladies for successfully defending the title they won two years back in Cameroon

Nigeria's women senior national team were crowned African champions for the ninth time after beating South Africa 4-3 on penalties at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday, December 1.

Having played goalless draw during normal regulation period, the match was stretched into extra 30 minutes and the two sides were unable to find the back of the net.

Thomas Dennerby ladies got the chance to break the deadlock in the 76th minute but Asisat Oshoala squandered the chance after Francisca Ordega won a penalty kick for her side.

At the end of the game, Nigeria came out victorious to win their ninth AWCON title as they go to the World Cup as African champions.

After the match, president Muhamadu Buhari congratulated the ladies for their heroic performances in Ghana despite starting their title defence on a losing note.

He said on his official Twitter handle: "Congratulations to the Super Falcons on their #AWCON18 victory over the Banyana Banyana of South Africa tonight.

"First they qualified for the World Cup in France next year, then tonight added the icing on the cake: winning AWCON for the 3rd consecutive time, and 9th time overall."

Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Party in Lagos Babajide Sanwo-Olu gave kudos to the ladies for their victory.

"For the 9th time you have made us proud, and shown that talent elevates and unites a people. Congratulations #Superfalcons, champions #AWCON2018."

Brighton and Hove Albion summer signing Leon Balogun also tweeted after the game saying: "We fly high, no lie, you know this!! Congrats to our @NGSuper_Falcons on that major achievement!"

Senate president Bukola Saraki via his Twitter handle (@bukolasaraki) expressed his excitement towards the Super Falcons for winning the title.

He said after the game that: "Champions of Africa! Congratulations to our @NGSuper_Falcons who have made the nation proud again. Congratulations on your well-deserved victory!"

Italian Serie A giants, AS Roma also congratulated the Nigerian ladies for emerging victorious at the end of the 2018 African Championship.

"Congratulations to the @NGSuper_Falcons on winning a record 9th @CAF_AWCON title. Amazing achievement ladies #Team9jaStrong."

Another fans Janine Anthony shared this encouraging words on her handle saying: "This team right here says if they had a fraction of what South Africa had, they would have given a sterner competition.

Yet, Champions for the 9th time. It's left to the Nigerian FA to give them their due for France. They've more than earned it. #AWCON2018."

Legit.ng recalls that the Super Falcons clinch their ninth AWCON title following a 4-3 win over South Africa after penalties in an entertaining fixture.

There were no goals during regulation time as both teams matched each other strength for strength all through 120 minutes.
