Nigeria suffered a disappointing start to their 2018 FIFA World Cup campaign in Kaliningrad on Saturday, June 16.

The Super Eagles were beaten 2-0 by Croatia in the second Group C encounter courtesy of an own goal from Oghenekaro Etebo in the first half and a spot kick from Luka Modric in the second half of the match.

With this victory, the Croats are now topping the table with massive three points and two goals, while coach Gernot Rohr's men are at the base of the log.

Argentina and Iceland occupy second and third positions respectively after sharing spoils in the first Group C encounter earlier in the day, as Sergio Aguero's goal got cancelled Alfred Finnbogason.

The three-time African champions were decent in the performance in the game but weren't purposeful enough upfront as they only managed two shots on target - none of which hit the target.

Leicester City's Ahmed Musa and Kelechi Iheanacho both came into the game in the second half but their introduction into the game had no impact as they couldn't reduce their team's deficit.

Nigeria battle stubborn Iceland in their next group game, and nothing short of victory in that game means they are out of the championship at the group stage.

Argentina will also square up against Croatia as they will hope to claim their first victory at the ongoing FIFA tournament.

The Super Eagles progressed beyond the group stage at the last edition held in Brazil under late coach Stephen Keshi and anything short of that will not be acceptable by Nigerians.

NAIJ.com earlier reported that the Super Eagles Nigeria tasted their first defeat to Croatia as they lost by 2-0 in their opening match of Group D.

Ogehenekaro Etebo unfortunately scored an own goal as Mario Manduzkic's flying header came off his foot and the ball rolls into the net to put Croatia ahead.

Gernot Rohr's men did not create a meaningful chance in the first half but came back strongly in the second half.
